9 ways to avoid an earthquake

An earthquake is a sudden shaking of the earth caused by the movement of tectonic plates. Earthquakes can occur anywhere in the world, but are most common in areas along fault lines where two plates meet. The severity of an earthquake depends on several factors, including the magnitude (size) and intensity (strength) of the quake. Earthquakes that measure 5 or above on the Richter scale are considered major earthquakes, while those measuring 7 or higher are classified as great quakes.

The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake was one of history’s most powerful earthquakes, registering at a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale. It struck near San Francisco Bay and resulted in more than 3,000 deaths and $400 million in damage

1. Don’t live in an earthquake zone.

2. Build your home on a solid foundation that won’t move in an earthquake.

3. Make sure your home is bolted to its foundation, so it doesn’t slide or collapse in an earthquake.

4. Install quake-proof windows and doorframes with latches that will keep them closed during shaking.

5. Hang heavy objects like mirrors and pictures away from beds, couches, and other places you might be sitting or sleeping during a quake.

6. 2. Don’t build on top of earthquake-prone areas like hills and mountainsides

7 Keep supplies like food, water, first aid kits etc., handy in case of emergencies. 6 Create a communication plan so you can keep in touch with loved ones if there’s no power or phone service after a quake hits.

8 Secure heavy furniture or appliances to prevent them moving around during an event of an earthquake.

9. Educate yourself and your family about what to do during an earthquake.
